Fishers Of Men 2005 Midwest Regional Championship
As nearly 136 teams, one by one, slipped passed the checkpoint boat on Day-2 and then roared off to the far reaches of the expansive waters in Table Rock Lake, the downgraded tropical depression, Rita, was beginning to show its effect on the tournament waters. The final day of competition had just begun with cloudy skies prevailing and 10 to 20 mph winds steadily increasing throughout the day. With three days of fishing behind them, several teams began to put together successful patterns that would enable them to move up in the final standings of the Fishers Of Men National Tournament Trail’s, Midwest Regional Championship.
Kevin and Bryan Jackson (Ozark Div.) headed up the James River Arm and began to work the wood structure along the river channel, in the 2 to 8 feet depth range. They were one of only a few teams that were able to put together a good shallow to midrange bite. Most other successful teams had been fishing between 20 and 55 ft. Utilizing buzzbaits, a Chartreuse/Black Lucky Craft crankbait, and 9 1/2” Luck E Strike worms, Bryan and Kevin added 4 bass, weighing 9.57lbs, to their previous day’s catch and moved up 8 places to finish 7th, overall, with a 2-day catch of 6 bass, weighing 15.20lbs.
Matt Elkins and Jason Merschman, Ohio Division anglers, brought in 3 impressive fish that tipped the scales to 9.83lbs. Adding these to the Day-1 5.38lbs. Big Bass, allowed them to move from 17th up to finish in 6th place. Matt attributed their success to a Yellow/Black 2” deep-diver crankbait.
Greg Lindbloom and Colin Fleck (Minnesota East) moved up from 19th place to finish 5th overall, with a limit weighing 13.30lbs, after the .5 lb. dead fish penalty, giving them a 2-day total of 7 fish at 18.61lbs.
Coming up from 8th and finishing in 4th place, the Ozark father/son team of Brian and Kyle Maloney caught 5 bass that crossed the scales at 11.87. Their 2-day, 8 fish total was 19.36lbs. Brian said that he and his son had been tossing spider jigs in behind boat docks up the James River Arm both days. He felt that the larger bass were moving into the shallows to feed at night and instead of traveling back out to the deep drop-offs; they were just moving off the banks to the nearest cover available, the inside edge of the floating and standing docks.
Day-1 leaders, Gary Minor and Scott Lythojohn, dropped two slots to finish the Midwest Regional in 3rd place. These perennial favorites weighed in an additional three bass, at 5.74lbs. This gave the pair a tournament total of 19.40lbs. for 8 fish. Both days they had been fishing jigs in deep water.
Bill Bacon and Bruce Jennings, fishing out of the Indiana North Division, were able to hang on to their second place spot with 3 fish, weighing 8.99lbs. (One going 4.39lbs.), adding to Day-1’s 12.53, for a total weight of 21.52.
In the end, though, another Indiana North team earned the attractive Midwest Regional Championship title plaques and the brand new Triton TR-186/150hp Mercury Optimax combination, along with an additional $1000.00 from Triton Boats, for participating in the Triton Elite program by fishing out of a Triton boat.
Bobby Sheehan, from Greenwood, Indiana and Bob Maples, of Brownsburg, utilized a locally purchased white jigging spoon to move all the way from 6th place to finish 1st and claim the victory. The two stated that by marking their fishing lines at 30 ft, they were able to keep their spoons working along the thermocline where the baitfish were suspending, along with eager to feed bass. They said that it didn’t take long to know if the bass were present because you would get a bite almost immediately if they were under the baitfish. Using this method netted them five bass, weighing an astounding and tournament-high limit of 16.42lbs, to go along with the previous day’s 9.38, for a 2-day winning total of 25.80lbs. Bobby wants to thank his sponsor, Denny’s Marina, located in Indianapolis and Ft. Wayne, for the new TR-20X. Other sponsors they want to express thanks are Ambush Lures and Esox Rods.
During the weighin, Kimberling City’s mayor and Schooner Resort owner, Leon Prior, presented Al Odom, our National Director, with a framed Certificate Of Appreciation, for accepting their invitation to come to Kimberling City and Table Rock Lake. Well, we could not have received any better welcome, kindness, help, and treatment from anyone other than the Kimberling City Lodging Association, its members, employees, and the residents of this area.
