The North Carolina East Fishers of Men Firefly Weeknight Series held their fifth tournament of the 2024 season on the Perquimans River, May 3, 2024. The afternoon started with temperatures in the 80’ with sunny skies and a winds 15 to 20 mph from the SE however a cold front passed an hour before the weigh-in and the temperature dropped into the sixty’s with North East winds overcast skies. Nine teams participated in the tournament and all teams attended the pre-tournament meeting.
The meeting was started with a message from Jason Smith who is one of our Firefly Weeknighter Series fishermen. Jason spoke about how in life we have to make many decisions. He mentioned that the fishermen would have to make a decision on where they would start fishing and what baits to use. Jason gave a powerful testimony about his decision to follow Jesus and that this would be the most important decision we would make of our lives. He asked a question of our participants about where they would spend eternity. He referenced several scripture verses such as John 14vs 1, that Jesus has prepared a place for us in Heaven and we need to accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior to find our eternal resting place with him. Jason closed his message with a prayer stressing that now was the time to make that most important decision to ask Jesus to come into their life.
After reviewing the rules highlights, our fishermen set out on the water in search of the winning catch. The fishermen found the buck bass to be abundant and with 44 fish weighed for a total of 93.58 pounds. 40 of the fish were released back into the water for 90.9% release. The average number of fish per team was 4, average weight per team 10.40 pounds and the average fish weight was 2.13 pounds. When the teams came to the scale, our current point leaders Jason Samson and Kenneth Wallace had the winning five fish catch that weighed 16.52 pounds however the final weight was 16.02 pounds with a .50 pound penalty for 2 dead fish. They also caught the Big Fish for the tournament that weighed 6.47 pounds. The first place prize was $255.00 dollars and Big Fish paid $45.00 dollars.
