PIRTLE & BLANKINSHIP WIN 2ND CONSECUTIVE FISHERS OF MEN TOURNAMENT
On Saturday, May 31, anglers of the Fishers of Men Louisiana North Central tournament trail held their fourth division tournament on Lake D’Arbonne in Farmerville. The Friday night pre-tournament meeting was hosted by the gracious members of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church of Farmerville. After enjoying a dinner of ham, vegetables and desserts, guest speaker Rev. John Finch—pastor of First United Methodist Church in Clay—shared his faith journey with the anglers and staff. At the conclusion of the meeting, one of our fellow anglers rededicated his life to Christ—Praise God!
The start of the tournament came early for the 58 anglers with a 5:40 a.m. blast off into 68 degree temperatures and nearly 100% humidity. Despite light, variable winds and partly cloudy skies throughout the day, the anglers had to fight hard to maintain their concentration as temperatures soared into the high 80s recorded at the 3:00 p.m. weigh-in.
With an impressive catch of 23.6 lbs, the team of Mike Pirtle and Glynn Blankinship continued their winning streak with their second consecutive win, having taken 1st place honors in the April Fishers of Men tournament on Caney Lake. The five-fish weighed by the West Monroe anglers, which included 2nd place big bass of 6.74 lbs caught by Blankinship, earned the duo a payout of nearly $1,600.
2nd place honors for the tournament went to Martin Elshout of Ruston who was fishing solo while his partner, Mark Price, served on a mission trip. Elshout covered a large amount of water, fishing from Gills Ferry (on the southwest arm of the lake) to the dam at the eastern end of the lake. Primarily utilizing Texas-rigged worms, Elshout secured 2nd place with five fish weighing 15.82 lbs. Just 7/100 of a pound behind Elshout was the 3rd place team from Monroe of John Stewart, Jr. and John Stewart, III. The father/son duo had seven catches on buzzbaits before 8 a.m., with the five largest weighing in at 15.75 lbs.
New to the series this tournament were Minden anglers Mark Hay and Travis Beaty. The partners found success on jigs, landing a total of five fish weighing 12.13 lbs. Rounding out the top five was the father/son team of Ricky and Brian Milstead. Around 10:30 a.m. the team was fishing the shallow waters of Lake D’Arbonne when Ricky landed the tournament’s 1st place big bass of 7.47 lbs on a wobblehead worm. The cumulative three-fish weight posted by the Milsteads was 11.64 lbs. Winners of the “just out of the money” prize of two Kistler rods were Jerry Silmon (Farmerville) and Ron Aulds (Calhoun). Overall, the teams participating in the Lake D’Arbonne tournament weighed in 86 fish totaling 196 pounds.
With only one division tournament remaining, Mark Price and Martin Elshout are currently in 1st place in the season points race. Following closely behind are Mike Pirtle and Glynn Blankinship in 2nd and Jerry Silmon and Ron Aulds in 3rd. The North Central Louisiana Fishers of Men division will hold its fifth and final tournament of the season on Saturday, June 28 on the Ouachita River. This tournament will be the Regional Qualifier tournament that will determine which teams will advance to the Regional and National Championships. Anglers of the Tournament Trail who qualify for the regional championship tournament will have the opportunity to win a fully rigged Triton TR-186 bass boat and to progress to the national championship tournament where a fully rigged Triton TR-20X will be given away.
