Snow and Sleet in Central Florida?? That is what met the Florida Central Division as they competed on the Harris Chain on 9 January 2010. The start of our 8th Season compared to our initial season in 2003 which had freezing and overcast skies throughout the day and with the same result…not many fish. With only 52 largemouths weighed in for a total weight of 99.78 pounds, there were no 5-fish limits caught and only two Teams weighing in four fish.

The winning Team of Josh Davis and John Brazzell weighed in three largemouths for a winning weight of 11.64. Their biggest fish was 5.35 lbs that helped Josh and John win 1st Place with total winnings of $2559.00, including the $1000.00 Bonus Award from Kirkman Road Veterinary in Orlando. Traveling in John’s Ranger Z21 with a 250 E-Tec, they used Lucky Craft crank and Git’Em Warlock baits in depths of 4-8 feet over eel grass in the Haines Creek area. Three bites..three fish!

Second Place was also won with only three fish. The Team of David Martindill and Glenn Welborn worked the canals off Little Lake Harris with Bomber 7A Fire Tiger baits to lure their 9.54 pounds to bite, including the 2nd Big Fish of the Day at 5.69 lbs. In the 3-4 foot clear to stained water, the Team fished out of Glenn’s Gambler with Mercury 225 outboard.

With one of the only two 4-fish catches, Tim and Todd Wagman weighed in 9.04 pounds of largemouth to win 3rd Place. Riding in their Skeeter with a Yamaha 225, Tim and Todd fished on Lake Carhart with a slow presentation of Senkos in the grass with 3 feet of stained water. They had other fish bite, but could not get them to stay on. Fishing on Lake Harris, Rodney Anschutz and Steve Rust brought two fish to the scales for 7.76, including the Big Fish of the Day…a 6.16 pounder. Rodney and Steve used Yozuri Rattle Traps in 6 feet of water.

Also finishing up in the money were the Male/Female Team of Anastasia and Billy Taylor 6.91 lbs, Keith Carson and John Cox 4.31 lbs, Doug Gilley and Fay Rowles 4.24 lbs, Daniel Lanier and Joe Ventrello 4.08 lbs, and Jason Casteel and Dave Robertson 3.89 lbs. Out of the 49 Teams entered, there were 23 Teams that did not weigh in. With the blast-off temperature of 29 degrees, water temperature of 49 degrees, and weigh in of 36 degrees, all the Competitors were happy to arrive back to the Hickory Point ramp. Next month’s Lake Monroe Tournament on February 6th should be more Fisherman Friendly.

The Friday Night Pre-Tournament Meeting was held at Mid Lakes Christian Church in Tavares off Hwy 19 near Hickory Point. The Fishers of Men thank the entire Mid Lakes Church for providing a hot meal for all the Competitors and their Guest. Prior to the Door Prizes and Tournament Instructions, the Guest Speaker was Chris Wells (www.chriswells.org) from South Carolina. Chris speaks around the country at Hunting and Fishing Seminars, and is the B.A.S.S. Chaplain. He challenged the audience to know their purpose in life, and to find this by reading the Bible. While reading thru the Bible, we need to allow God to speak to us and obey what He is telling us. Chris also mentioned that we all need “guardrails” when going through life. “Guardrails” keep us from being hurt, and we need a few close friends to act as our “guardrails”. If you have a struggle, our Chaplain Michael Surovik would be a great foundation for a “guardrail”. Michael’s contact info is on the Florida Central Division’s website.

The Florida Central Division’s Legacy Series (Adult/Junior) starts January 23rd on John’s Lake in Clermont. Contact the FLC Legacy Director John Higgins at 407.468.1694 or go to the FOM Legacy Webpage for more information on the Legacy Series. John’s Lake is a top fishery in Central Florida, and would be a great place to take a Youth fishing in a Tournament with other competitor of the Adult/Junior range.

Our next Team Series Tournament is February 6th on Lake Monroe. The Feb 5th Friday Night Pre-Tournament Meeting at Westview Baptist Church in Sanford is one of the tastiest “Fish Fry” of the year. Expect more Competition for what usually is our biggest Tournament of the Season.
