Alabama Central held our Regional Qualifier Tournament Friday night meeting at Antioch Baptist Church. They fed a crowd of 60 people a hot dog supper with all the trimmings. Matt Higgins brought us a devotional on teamwork. Matt talked about commitment and responsibility as a member of any team. He talked about some of the different types of teams, especially our Fishers of Men Ministry. He stated we should be thankful for the staff, both locally and nationally, who see this as a ministry to reach lost people. Most fishermen are not aware of the work or the commitment of these folks to make Fishers of Men what it is and to uphold what it stands for. The emphasis was on finding the role that God has specifically for you and then being willing to say “here I am Lord, send me”. There was one profession of faith and 1 recommitment.
As the 2009 Angler of the Year, Matt also made the presentation for the Alabama Central Division Angler of the Year for 2010. He stated that this year’s angler of the year demonstrates what Fishers of Men is all about. His spiritual growth is evidenced by his lifestyle changes. We were proud to present this year’s award to Buck Brackin.
Saturday morning dawned hot and muggy. It reached 98 degrees by noon, but shortly after noon we had a terrific electrical storm. There was an awesome downpour of rain for over an hour with gusty wind and lightening. It was kicking up 4 foot swells on the lake and caused our fishermen to have to seek shelter. At one point several men were holding down the tents at the weigh-in station to keep them from blowing away. It continued to rain off and on the rest of the afternoon. Despite the weather, our fishermen had a fairly good day with 17 teams bringing in a 5-fish limit. A total of 93 fish weighing in at 226.68 pounds were brought to the scales. First place, 1st big fish and 1st bonus bucks went to the team of Allen Yarborough & Chris Rutland with 18.69 pounds, including big fish at 5.51 lbs. Second place and 2nd bonus bucks went to the team of Mike Hearn, Jr. and Mike Hearn, Sr. with 16.79 lbs. Third place with to the team of Andy Leslie and Grant Bennett with 16.34 lbs. Top adult/junior team was Greg & Candler McCollum with 8.41 lbs. Second big fish went to the father/son team of Jeff and Terry Cook at 5.22 lbs.
Alabama Central Division’s 2010 Points Champions were Randy Culver and David Sherrill. They were presented with a pair of custom built fishing rods made especially for them by Walt Higgins, as well as checks totaling $605. This year all teams who fished at least three tournaments are qualified for the Southeast Regional at Clarks Hill Lake. As soon as we have all the information we will mail you an update. In the meantime, watch for updates to the national website at www.fomntt.com

They were really good sports about the adverse weather, working with us in the rain. P.S. I’ve never seen anyone check in boats and fish at the same time. Good fishing, Danny!
