Geist Res. Jeff Rooze Mem. Results: Jun 26, 2010
The third tournament of the year was held at Geist Reservoir on June 26. This year we did things a little different. Normally our last tournament of the year is dedicated to the memory of Jeff Rooze. This year his widow and assistant director Sherri (Rooze) Stoub was going to be in the area and wanted to see us, so why not change the timing. We were also blessed to meet her new husband Everett and her sister and brother in law. When I walked into the McCordsville United Methodist Church I did not see Sherri but I instantly heard that laugh and knew she was there. For all of us that fished under the directorship of Jeff and Sherri Rooze a ton of emotions and memories came flooding back and it was good to see her.
After a meal of pizza, breadsticks and dessert Sherri took the floor. She first thanked us for inviting her, then went on to explain that she has wanted to come back for some time but emotionally, it was just too hard. She wanted to be clear that she had not “abandoned” us after Jeff passed. She then went on to talk about leaving a legacy. We all know Jeff left a great legacy. He not only prayed for our division and the fishermen, he prayed with you. Jeff had a heart for God and used his passion for fishing to advance God’s word. To top it all off we all know Jeff could wield a mean fishing rod on the water. Sherri’s final question was “What kind of legacy are you going to leave”? A very simple yet humbling question.
Randy Gipson decided he missed all of us up here in the Indiana North Division so he, along with his Indiana South partner Mel Bigham, felt a reunion was in order. They brought 5 fish to the scales that weighed 15.4 lbs to take the win. It was nice seeing you again Randy but next time you show up, can you just stop by to say hello? Second place was the Indiana North team of Glenn Amos and Dave Blankenship. Their limit of 14.08 lbs also included the second big bass of the tournament which was 4.74 lbs. And I had heard Blankenship can’t fish……I don’t think that is true. Third place went to the team of Danny Guard and Wes Woodward. They crossed the scales with a limit weighing 13.28 lbs. anchored by a 5.53 lb bass that also claimed big bass honors for the tournament. Guess the rumor that the Guard boys are only good on Raccoon is a myth (I actually knew that since I have been nailed by them on numerous occasions). Nice work fellows. Jacob Wheeler and Bryan Johnson brought in a 5 fish limit that weighed 11.79 lbs to claim fourth place. Fifth place went to the ever present in the money, Terry and Brody McWilliams. They had a limit of fish that weighed 11.29 lbs. Rounding out the top 6 was the Indiana North team of Jerry Lesley and Rick Randolph. Jerry was fishing with a sub., Scott Carpenter, and they boated 11.09 lbs of fish. Now I always thought Rick was the fishing machine of the team…….guess I was wrong. Of course Rick did practice with Jerry on Friday so I have no doubt he will say he put Jerry on the fish.
I heard reports of the fish being caught in 6” of water on a frog and deep on ¾ oz. jigs. Seems like any pattern you wanted to fish was available.
Our next tournament will be held on Lake James on July 17. With the points being tight and this being a new body of water for FOM Indiana North this may prove to be the lake that makes or breaks the battle for the point’s championship.
