The GA South Division kicked off 2010 at West Point Lake this weekend. In
summary it was Wet, Cold, and Muddy!

Like a big ole Hawg Bass locked in on an injured shiner, bad weather locked onto
West Point lake almost a week before the tournament. Heavy downpours hit during
the Friday night banquet and several times through the night, but surprised
everyone when it was down to a light mist at back-in. It stayed that way pretty
much all day, and the forecasted clearing never showed up.

West Point has been down-right ugly all January, and seemed intent on not
loosening up on the last weekend of the month. It seems like no matter how bad
the conditions, someone figures out a way to break the code, and two teams were
able to bag over ten pounds.

Allen Burkhalter and Charlie Whittle, the team that won in a South Georgia
winter storm on Lake Harding two years ago, claimed first runner up. They fished
shallow water with small crankbaits, their deepest coming in 4-foot deep water.

2008 Points Champions Jim Buntin and Jim Pass went with a deeper water approach.
They played cat and mouse with the 3rd place team after discovering they had
beat them to their 'Hot' spot. They only managed three keepers, and found out
that Harrison and Dawson had caught their other two. Fortunately, the three they
boated were big enough to give them a good half pound lead with 13.38 pounds.

One of the three was nearly a bonifide Hawg, just under 6 pounds, and won big
fish honors for the day. The $1200 purse was certainly a good reward for a nasty
day on the lake, and probably started sinking in bout the time their feet began
to warm up under the truck heater on the way home.

18 teams were unable to put a keeper in the boat, very likely a 'worst' catch
record in the Division's history. By the end of the day, most of the anglers
were happy to have a predictably tough tournament behind them, and are looking
forward to the warm days of February on Bartlett's Ferry.
