Bishop and Miller win Triton Gold!!!
The Kentucky West Division kicked off another exciting season at the Moors Marina on Kentucky Lake with hopes of lots of big bass, great spring-time weather, and wonderful fellowship. Two out of three ain’t bad! Thirty teams arrived at the fabled fishery to scour its depths in search of its plentiful largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass. But before the fishing, everyone would gather for the pre-tournament meeting that Fishers of Men is famous for.
Zion’s Cause Baptist Church welcomed 73 anglers and family members with a delicious dinner of fried chicken and homemade vegetables followed by desserts of all kinds. After eating our fill, everyone settled in for the inspirational message from Pastor Charles Frazier. Charles spoke to us about the ability that we have to please God through Jesus Christ. He enables us because we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. Following the message, four anglers prayed to recommit their lives to the Lord! Praise God!
Saturday, the first day of Spring, dawned clear and bright as the warming trend continued for western Kentucky. The lake was still well below summer pool, leaving many favorite springtime holes high and dry as 30 teams blasted off into the pre-dawn twilight searching for five bass to fill their limits. Only one team would be successful. Following three weeks of huge catches on Kentucky Lake, anglers inexplicably struggled to put together any sort of pattern for 15” keeper-sized bass. Loads of short fish were landed, but keepers were scarce.
Lee Bishop and Mike Miller became the first Triton Gold winners of the season. They figured out the puzzle better than everyone else with the only limit of the day with a total weight of 12.42 pounds. Bishop and Miller reported catching their fish after a long run using tubes, jigs, and shaky-head worms made by our local sponsors at Hook Some Bass Lures. They also won the Bonus Bucks and earned a total of $1557.50 including the Triton Gold Bonus.
Greg Gibson and Greg Paschal stayed on Kentucky Lake and landed 3 bass weighing 8.77 pounds which was good for second place. Their bag included a 4.26 pound largemouth that earned them second place big bass money as well. Team Greg used shaky-heads and a jig to catch the fish that they weighed in.
Coming in third was the team of Steve Denton and Lloyd Easterly with 3 fish weighing 7.41 pounds. Landing the big bass of the day – a 5.19 pound smallmouth – was the team of Alfred Goldsberry and Brian Crawford. Before the trolling motor hit the water the brute hit a ¾ ounce Rat-l-trap.
