First -- Iowa FOM Open – Results

The day after a COLD – W I . N . .D . . .Y …… Stormy front moved thru SW Iowa we hold our first FOM Iowa Open tournament. I’m not sure if fishermen feared the weather, the two other open tournaments in the area or something else but the expected attendance numbers was not what had been planned for. In true FOM style …. We accept what he Lord provides and made the best of what we have.

We welcomed to ‘Tournament Fishing 101”, two teams fishing their first tournament of any kind. I wish my first tournament would have been against the kind of fishermen we have seen within our FOM membership, kind considerate and fair. I felt our competitors welcomed these new teams in a Christian manner that other tournament circuit teams don’t share. I wish to publicly thank each of our prior FOM team members for acting like the Christian souls that you are. This is the most noticeable thing that I’ve seen from our rank that sets FOM apart from many other tournament circuits.

Our fishermen reported the fishing to be slow after the storms and weather fronts of the week prior having impacted the activity levels of the fish. But true to form several of our teams were able to put together good limits of fish. Teaming up for this open were several FOM current and prior members to lead the field at weigh in. The winning weights from other tournaments on this lake this spring have been in the mid to low teens with a few teams in the money with under 6# not unheard of.

Chris Calkins and Steve Green brought in a 5 fish limit, 4 nice fish with a kicker fish taking the big bass prize (5.79#) for the winning total of 19.07#. I felt this was an unexpected weight for this lake this year, good job guys!

Following closely and taking 2nd place winnings were prior FOM members Rob Weberg and Shawn Holly weighing a 5 fish limit for a total weight of 15.91#.

Finishing 3rd and weighing in the 2nd biggest fish for the day (5.53#) were newcomers to tournament fishing Rick Zimmerman and Brad Chase with a total weight of 10.71#. Good finish for not fishing tournaments before.

Scott Mauer and Tommy Little (Tournament Tackle owner) brought in a nice single fish for a weight of 5.09#, and finishing the field, another team fishing in their first tournament were Justin Messer and John Pishrik.

Tommy Little and Tournament Tackle sweetened the weigh in process by giving a sample pack of new baits to be offered for next year to all the teams and added a pair of ‘Big Bite’ t-shirts to the 2nd chance drawing. Other items in this unique drawing that we hold at the end of the weigh in are items donated by sponsors and FOM members. Prizes included: a pair of Fishing Rods/Reels donated by Chris Calkins, a pair of $50 certificates from RaZr Rods, a pair of tackle packs from Tournament Tackle and a 4 pack of Disciples Cross -- Ronda Andresen.

Please support the local sponsors of the FOM Iowa division with your business and be sure to thank them for their generous support.

May God’s Blessing be with you,
