June 9 -- 12 Mile Open Tournament --

Saturday started EARLY as the director chose to sleep at home and drive to the tournament site prior to check in and registration. This being the reason for the tardiness of this report as I try to post the report the same time I upload the results, I went to bed instead … sorry.

Upon arrival at the ramp we found 5 boats already in line ready for registration. Pastor Gary, Iowa Team Chaplain was already backed ˝ way down the ramp. Gary stated he had been up since 1:15 … I guess the Lord was talking to him about a message to be shared sometime soon.
Sunrise found 12 boats registered and on the water gathered close for our opening prayer. Calm waters and cool temps at blast off were no indication of the 20+ MPH winds and 90+ temps we were to find at weigh-in.

We are fishing 12 Mile lake just a few years after a major renovation drawdown, and this year has been known for tough limits of keeper fish with lots of 14 7/8” fish with fat bellies. All of our fishermen found most of the fish eager to bite and short of legal length; but most teams were able to find a few keepers to bring to scales. Our scale master tuned up the system to find the minor differences in weight being brought to weigh-in.

As we closed the scales, we asked all to pay attention to the invitation message presented by Pastor Gary. Presenting the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the challenge of knowing Him as Lord and Savior is the mission of FOM. Our tournaments are just the vehicle used to bring this good news to our fishermen.

We then tallied the results and found the team Jon Murphy and Shawn Holly to have found a few larger fish to open up a pound and a half lead with 13.54# taking the $396.00 - 1st place winnings. Pastor Gary Goodwin and Dan Burkhardt found only 3 keepers with one weighing in at 3.77# to take the Big Bass prize of $48. 2nd Place goes Derik Dunton & Brodie Coughenour with 11.95# and 3rd prize moneys go to Steve Green and Chris Calkins with 11.68#. I noted several old faces back to fish with us bringing new faces with them (evangelism at work maybe, I hope so?), we also had several new teams fishing in this tournament, some for their first tournament ever fished, I hope you all enjoyed a great day on the water and will consider coming back to fish with us in future events. The 12 Mile Team tournament is next weekend, our next open tournament will be on 3 Mile on July 14th, and the next weekend July 21 we will have the team event on 3 Mile.

After the presentation of the prize checks we asked our 1st place team to draw for the winners of our ‘2nd Chance Drawing’. For this tournament we had 2 - Bass Pro Rod/Reel combos, 4 - Prize packs from Tournament Tackle, 2 - $50 certificates for Razr Rods, a 4 pack of Disciples Crosses and Stren Hats and Line. All fishermen received a spool of Stren line that we were able to carry over from the Okoboji team tournament.
