Smith Mtn Lake Results: Mar 10, 2012
Our first stop of the 2012 VA West trail found us at one of our favorite spots, beautiful Smith Mtn Lake. Our great friends at Goodview Baptist Church outdoors ministry hosted our Friday night event for about 70 folks, which included a fabulous meal, many great door prizes and an inspirational message that led to one first time decision to follow Christ and one rededication!
As always, SML State Park was our launch site and they did a wonderful job of making us feel at home.
Twenty-two boats blasted off in the cool, clear morning in search of tight lines and heavy bags – all of which were very thankful the wind from the previous day had departed.
All our teams made it back to the weigh in on time and safely with a total of 78 fish weighing over 210 lbs were weighed in and safely released alive to be caught another day.
One of our new teams from WV took top honors at the scales bringing in a very nice 5 alive at 22.61 lbs (A NEW VA WEST RECORD BAG) including the big bass of the day at 7.53 lbs. Congrats team Eric Rumley and Robert Cambell on a great victory and your $1,022 payout for the day.
They are now also our points leaders with a total of 200 season points from this event . 150 pts for the win and 50 bonus pts for attending the Friday night event. (Reminder – the pts champs from each division will not only win the Pts Champ pot – they also win an auto berth into the 2012 national championship next spring.
This was the very first time these guys ever fished with FOM and they reported SML as their “home water”. A fluke was their weapon of choice for the day, catching them 20 ft down in clear 50 degree water.
Team Rumley/Cambell wish to thank the Good Lord for a good day, FOM for putting on a great event and Tackle Trap. They very much enjoyed the weekend and made a point to compliment the Friday night event.
2nd place included another new member to our division. Jeff Kincaid & his partner Taft Durr brought a very nice 20.34 lb sack to the scales and went home with $496 for their efforts.
3rd place was team Lacy Burnett & Harold Black (no strangers to receiving FOM payouts). Their total 19.73 lbs five alive earned them $356.
4th place went to the AJ team of Dennis Wright & Seth Wright who earned $326 for their day’s (15.01 total lbs) efforts which included the 2nd Big Fish payout for the very nice 6.61 lb.
Finishing “Just out of the money” was the team of Floyd Williams/Maurice Oakes.
“Last place” (amongst teams who weighed in fish) went to the father/son team of Robert & Beau Custer.
Both of these teams will get a shot at some very nice prizes at our next Friday night event.
We return to SML March 31 for our next tourney and our Fri night event will be hosted by our good friends at Radford Baptist church.
We are so grateful to our division sponsors Angler’s Choice Marine, DCR/VA State Parks, McCraw Insurance, Jimmy Barton & Logan Fire App. For helping us make our trial possible and fun for all.
Fishers of Men would also like to thank all of our fine national sponsors; Skeeter Boats, Yamaha, Stren, Pflueger, Strike King Lure Company, Nester Hosiery, Markel American Insurance, Marshall’s Marine, Power-Pole, Duckett Fishing, Buckeye Lures, Keelshield, Solar Bat, Jacobs Glass, Helly Hansen Workwear, and Rejuvenade.
