The Kentucky West Division reached the mid-point of the season last week as they rolled into Glasgow, Kentucky to fish the fertile waters of Barren River Lake. Around 70 anglers and friends gathered together at the home of our director, Joel Franks, for a great time of fellowship and inspiration Friday evening.

Joel and Melanie prepared a fish fry with all of the trimmings for the crowd, cooking some of Barren River's crappie, fries, hush puppies, baked beans and cole slaw followed by plenty of strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla cake. After everyone was filled, they settled in to listen to Joel tell the glorious Gospel message. He explained how people must understand that they are lost before they can ever be saved because Jesus came to seek and to save those who were lost. Following the message, one angler recommitted his life to Christ!

Saturday morning dawned warm and still as 31 boats raced into the morning twilight in search of 5 of Barren's largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass. Every team was able to bring fish to the 3:00 P.M. weigh-in, with 27 of them weighing in a limit. Fish were caught from the surface down to nearly 20 feet deep with a variety of techniques working. Barren River Lake rose about 5 feet after last weekend's soaking rain, inundating weeds that were growing on the bank and forming new cover for the bass. The cooler water also served to provide comfort in areas with shallow brush and rocks. The bottom line is, fish were everywhere!

The winning stringer was brought to the scales by Jarrod Hembree and Lucas Devere. Devere and Hembree reported catching their 17.51 pounds of bass on Rebel Pop-R's early in the morning and jigs as the sun got higher in the sky. Along with the win in the Bonus Bucks, they netted $1214.50 in prize money and grabbed the lead in the points championship race.

Finishing second was the team of Jeremy Bowen and Mike Walker who used jigs and big worms to bring in 16.23 pounds of largemouth bass. The big bass of the tournament - a 5.30 pound lunker - fell to a big worm in water around 6 feet deep. Along with the Bonus Bucks, they earned $886.50 on the day.

David Lowe and Timmy Gaddie landed the third place stringer with 15.70 pounds of bass. They reported catching their fish on jigs, worms, and crankbaits. They earned $513.00 for their efforts.

Rounding out the top six were the teams of Ralph Feldman and Mike Williams who used D&L jigs to land 15.66 pounds of bass. Ricky and Jared Elmore caught 13.48 pounds of largemouths using crankbaits; and Kenny Hardin and Vernon Sowers landed 13.26 pounds using flukes and trick worms.
