Mike Smith and Brian Jordan Take Day One Lead With 22.69 lbs in the Fishers Of Men Stren Team Series Pickwick Lake National Championship

04/12/12, Florence, AL…130 boats blasted out of the McFarland Park this morning onto beautiful Pickwick lake in search of a heavy limit of bass that would help keep their team in the top 26 for the Friday evening cut. Great weather prevailed today as fishermen searched for spawning and post-spawned bass along shallow flats, shallow ditches, and heading toward deep channel ledges or the underwater rocky structure up near the Wilson Dam. An astounding 120, 5-fish limits were recorded in today’s 633 bass that crossed the scales an impressive 1607.85 lbs.
The Tennessee East team of Michael Smith and Brian Jordan captured the lead early today, with 5 fish weighing, 22.69 lbs. Their splendid catch included the $250.00, Day 1, 2nd Big Fish at 7.45 lbs. The young men wouldn’t say where they fished, only that they had boated just 6 keepers all day.
A little more than two and a half pounds behind the leaders and with 20.02 lbs are Ken and John Shumate, fishing out of the North Carolina-Piedmont Division. John and Ken’s limit included a 6.11 kicker.
Virginia-West teammates Nathan Alt and Jeff Camp are presently resting in third place with 19.53 lbs.
Alabama North-East boys, Casey Martin and Eric Johnson, are resting in fourth place with 18.23 lbs.
Rounding out the top 5 are Louisiana-South partners, Tom and TJ Goins, with 18.15.
The Day 1, $500.00, 1st Big Fish award will be presented to North Carolina-Piedmont anglers, Ray Furr and Dean Collins for their 8.37 lbs brute. The pair are close, with 16.70 lbs, and tomorrow promises to be, even better. The bite is beginning to return to normal as this fleeting cold front is passing. We look forward to more heavy strings.
In the 3 days of competition, all teams will fish Friday for a chance to make the top 20% "cut" by weight. The top 26 teams will then, compete Saturday April 14, for the title of Fishers of Men National Champions and a brand-new, 2012 Skeeter FX 21, powered by a Yamaha 250-SHO 4-stroke, valued at nearly $72,000.00 and a total purse of cash and prizes valued at $125,000.00.
