Milner Tops Field of 108 Anglers to Capture Fishers of Men Big Bass Open Title

Anglers from across North Louisiana converged on Lake D’Arbonne on Saturday, March 30 for the 2nd Annual Fishers of Men Easter Big Bass Open. The tournament festivities began Friday evening at the North Louisiana Exhibition Center with a Family Fun Night where over 175 anglers, tournament staff, friends and family members were treated to a fish fry and the live music of the Bayou Crossing band.

Brad Stine, the most media covered Christian comedian in the country, served as guest speaker for the event. Referred to as “God’s Comic” by The New Yorker magazine, the Nashville-based performer brought high-energy comedy coupled with a thought-provoking message that both entertained and challenged alike. At the conclusion of Stine’s message, 14 participants made either a first time decision to follow Christ or recommitted their lives to Him.

On Saturday morning, with overcast skies and temperatures just below 60 degrees, the field of over 100 anglers made their first casts as the clock rolled to 6:30 a.m. A short while later, the rain that would remain steady throughout the day began to fall, often accompanied by winds up to 15 mph. However, the weather was no deterrent for the competitors that remained focused on their search for the big bass of the day worth $3,000 or one of the three places to be paid out each hour. Anglers across the lake tuned in throughout the day to Z-107.5 for updates broadcast live from the weigh-in site at Ludwig Brothers Marine and then had to make the decision of whether to keep fishing for a bigger bite or hope the time spent weighing their fish would pay off.

The first big bass of the day came early for Chad Posey who landed a 7.84-pounder on his first cast of the morning, flipping a Sweet Beaver soft plastic. The fish, which won Posey 1st place in the 7:30-8:30 hour, held the top spot until the 10:30-11:30 hour brought Michael Colvin to the weigh-in scales. Colvin was fishing a black & blue jig around 9:30 when he felt the unmistakable “thump” on his line. After a short struggle, the angler landed the 8.36 pound bass that would take 1st place for the hour and hold the lead for much of the rest of the day. It was in that same hour that Taylor Kolb weighed his 3.63 pound bass that took top honors for the Youth Big Bass Challenge and earned the angler a $500 check.

In the 11:30-12:30 hour, Bobby Milner brought in a 6.42 pounder that won 1st place for the hour. Milner began to raise suspicions that he had something bigger in the livewell when he didn’t return to the water to fish. Those suspicions were confirmed in the last hour of the tournament when Milner returned to the stage with his double-digit lunker. Milner was slowly fishing a brush hog in shallow grass at 8:30 a.m. when the fish took the bait. After a long fight and the fish jumping several times, the angler was able to net the 10.32-pounder that would capture the big bass title for the tournament. With two hourly 1st place wins and the overall big bass, Milner earned a $4,000 payout for the day. In total, nearly $10,000 in prizes was paid to the anglers over the course of the day.
