Iowa’s Regional Qualifier Tournament for 2012 finds us at Brushy Creek near Fort Dodge.

At our Friday night meeting, we were presented a new product from Farmland foods, a heat and eat bar-b-q pulled pork. Our fishermen showed their approval of the product with most taking multiple sandwiches …. I found it to be quite tasty as well. My family will look for this product for family outings in the future.

The evening’s message was presented by Pastor Dan from Trinity. Dan educated us with a quick review of several parables from the book of Luke, showing us how these stories change depending on whose perspective you view the story from. In the Prodigal son, most us view the story from the lost son’s point of view and see us returning to God, but look at it from the father’s point of view and you see the actions that God would take and want us to mimic. Or from the older son’s point of view showing the actions taken with someone without Christian values. Three different points of view from the same simple story, I guess this is the way we need to spend our time with the Bible, not just reading, but studying it. Dan also pointed out to us that our name sake statement …. “Follow Me --- and --- I will make you Fishers of Men”. The word ‘and’ as used by the author means ‘to be equal or the same’. So when we as Christians follow the Lord, we must also actively pursue those efforts to bring new souls to Christ thus bringing pleasure to Him. Dan then handed all in attendance a written copy of a “Sinner’s Prayer” and asked that we all voice this prayer jointly to close the message.

Tournament morning found the director asleep at the wheel, either setting his alarm incorrectly or sleeping through it. When I woke at the motel with only 15 min. before blast off, all I could do was to make a quick phone call to one of the fishermen hoping someone took the lead and bailed me out of a big mistake. I found out that our fishermen were already on the water, live wells checked and all but me ready to go. So with a quick time check from my clock, asking that someone open the tournament with a prayer then let the tournament begin. A big THANKS to Chris for keeping the tournament on-time.

The fishing reports from the lake for the last few weeks have indicated that our fishermen would find the fishing tough. Here in central Iowa we have seen major changes in our weather conditions over the last few weeks that have dropped the water temp from the low 90s down to the low to mid 70s. This appears to have pulled the fish from the deep haunts where they had been being caught during the heat of the summer. The fish seem to have scattered at various depths with our fishermen not finding a constant pattern to catch them. Fish were being caught here and there with numbers not being caught at any one location, more of a run and gun style tournament --- move, move and move again.

Today’s tournament was won by team Derik Dunton/ Jon Dunton with a limit of fish and big bass, once again taking home the winning check.

But I feel the bigger story is team Chris Calkins/ Brodie Coughenour winning the Points Championship by just 2 points … the unique storyline here is that Chris and Brodie win the points championship without winning any of the 5 team tournaments this year, while the team of Dunton/Dunton take home much of the winnings this year, but fall short of the points championship.

Congratulations to Chris and Brodie, Derik and Jon and all the fishermen who fished the Iowa Division this year. I’ve really enjoyed being a small part of the FOM Ministry bringing you tournaments this year.
