Harris’ Capture Second Fishers of Men Win

On Saturday, May 12, anglers of the North Central LA Division of the Fishers of Men National Tournament Trail returned to Kel’s Kove on Lake Claiborne for the fourth tournament of the 2012 season. With only one tournament remaining, the battle for the season points championship was at the forefront of each team’s mind as the field sped away from the launch site just after daybreak.

The pressure to perform was highest for Kenny and Courtney Harris who came into the tournament with only a marginal lead in the points race. Practice day preparations paid off for the father/son duo as it was then that the anglers found what they needed to stave off the competition—a single location that produced over 20 fish on the day of the tournament. With such success, the Harris’ were able to put together a stringer with a collective five-fish weight of 17.01 pounds and earn 1st place honors for the second tournament in a row, collecting a payout of over $1,000.

For the 2nd place team of Patrick Daniel and John Ross, variety was the order of the day as the anglers were able to catch fish in numberous locations across the lake, both shallow and deep, using topwaters, Rat-L-Traps and crankbaits. The five largest fish, most of which were caught on crankbaits, tipped the scales at 16.34 pounds and produced earnings for the team of $420.

Winners of 3rd place overall—Ken Lantrip and Chad Pody—took advantage of the overcast and rainy conditions and stuck with a pattern of fishing topwater baits in the shallows throughout the day. This approach netted a five fish stringer of 14.38 pounds and a payout of $230. Steve Danna and Charlie Watkins earned their payout for the tournament only five minutes into the day. It was then that Danna, fishing a Carolina-rigged centipede, landed the 1st place big bass of the tournament weighing-in at 6.70 pounds.

On the Friday night prior to the event, Calvary Baptist Church of Ruston hosted the pre-tournament meeting for which Greg Dunn served as guest speaker. Dunn, pastor of New Zion Baptist Church in Oak Grove, shared an inspiring message in which he challenged those in attendance to evaluate their purpose, priorities and direction.

The next tournament of the North Central Louisiana Fishers of Men division will be the June 16 regional qualifier tournament on the Ouachita River. For more information, log on to the website at www.fomntt.com or contact Tournament Director Brent Crawford: (318) 548-4196 or brentwade@aol.com.
