Roanoke River Tournament Results

The 5th and final tournament of the 2012 season for the NC East Division was held on the Roanoke River in Plymouth, NC on July 14.

The Friday night meeting was held at the Plymouth Church of Christ. We want to thank members of the church, Pete Modlin and his wife for their hospitality. The Modlins have been great supporters of Fishers of Men for the past six years. The message was delivered by Rev. Bill Braswell of the Plymouth Church of God. There were 4 rededications indicated on the response cards. We had 2 members to accept Christ this year and there were 18 rededications. Praise the Lord!

The meal was catered by Bob Carson, owner of Bob BQ Catering Concepts in Elizabeth City, NC. Desserts were provide by the ladies of the division's staff and the were delicious.

The weather for the tournament was hot and humid, but the winds were light which allowed teams to travel to other rivers in search of their catch. This was good news because the fish kill in the aftermath of last year's hurricane took a tremendous toll on the Roanoke River. Most teams left the Roanoke for other locations. However, fishing was tough all over the area as only 5 teams were able to weigh in a five-fish limit. The weights were lower than expected, but bass fishing in July can often be slow.

As the day started the team of Charles Goff and Bobby Clarke held a 5 point lead on the field. They would have to have a good day in order to hold off their closest rivals for the 2012 Points Championship. There were 4-5 teams with a realistic chance to overtake them if they slipped.

The tournament was won by Gerald Murray and Kevin Jones with a weight of 16.16 lbs. anchored by a 3.90 lb. kicker which was the big fish of the tournament. Murray and Jones started the day in fourth place in the season's standings and needed to make up an 8 point deficit. They received $1077.50 for their efforts including Bonus Bucks and Big Fish checks.

Goff and Clarke were one of the last teams to weigh in and everyone wondered if they could hold off the late charge of Murray and Jones. Jones is a former FOM National Champion and two-time NC East Division Points Champion. Goff and Clarke weighed in 12.80 lbs. which was good enough for second place and they secured the 2012 Points Championship. They also had the second biggest fish of the day at 3.87 lbs. They won $608.50 which included Bonus Bucks and Big Fish money.

Third place went to Buck and David Buchanan with 9.20 lbs. They took home $291.00 including Bonus Bucks.

Goff and Clarke had a phenomenal season compiling a total weight of 68.11 lbs. which is second largest weight for a Points Champion in the NC East Division. Their weight was only 3.51 lbs. behind the mark set by Eric Tilly and Don Porter in 2007.

By winning the Points Championship, Goff and Clarke automatically qualify for the 2012 National Championship which will be held in April. They also have won the NC East Points Championship pot worth $600.00.
