Day one of the 2017 District 10 Championship on Lake St. Claire is in the books.

Our event started out on Thursday evening at the Refuge Community Church in Warren, Michigan. Thanks to pastor Tom Ouweleen and his church for inviting us in. After our meal Pastor Tom spoke of how God was found in his life during some real trying times and that we need to just look and we can see him in our lives.  His message was followed by our business meeting and the fishermen headed back for some sleep and an early morning wake up.

On a brisk breezy early Thursday morning the teams participating in the district qualifying tournament left the Harley Ensign Memorial ramp in search of the big fish known to be on Lake St. Claire. The lake, known for big bags of smallmouth, also has a good supply of largemouth which will probably be found in some bags.

At 3:00 p.m. the first flight returned to the ramp and by 3:15 all teams had checked in.  As the boats were being loaded on the trailers everyone was looking forward to seeing some big bags and we were not disappointed.

The Indiana South team of John Santos and Matt McClannahan were the day one leaders with five big smallies weighing 21.78 lbs. along with the day one big bass weighing 5.78 lbs.  Richard Colon and George Lord, Jr. from the Michigan division were second with 19.99 lbs. The husband and wife team, Marlan and Debbie Brown, from the LBL division brought in 19.25 lbs. for third. Donavan and Daniel Smith from Kentucky were in fourth with 18.19 followed by the Indiana South team of Gary and Rick Straber with a limit weighing 17.77 lbs.

Tomorrow is another day, so stay tuned.
