Bradley Enfinger and Brandon Ingram take the lead on Day One by a slim 1.20-pound margin. With the top 6 places all weighing in 20-pound + limits, only 3 pounds separate them all. Margins that slim can be made up or lost with one hefty fish or a dink that couldn’t get culled.
Joe Durham Jr. and Brian Bohanon set the Over-20 bar early in the weigh-in, coming in with the very first flight. They would get bumped 5 times throughout the afternoon and were able to hang onto 6th place for the day.
By about the time they could get their boat trailered and got back to the stage area, they had been bumped to second. Jay Grogan and Ryan Ingram, names very well known in the Eufaula community, squeezed them out by almost a solid pound. The biggest difference being their biggest fish, a 6.80-Pound Eufaula Hawg! It raised hope that a slew of big ones would be seen by days end.
They held off 7 additional 6-pound class fish, but would eventually have to tip their hat to a 7-pounder as the final flight weighed in. Winston Michel and Sandy Gaudet, boat number 185 out of 192 brought the beautiful prize-winning fish that pressed the scales at 7.18#s. Without that monster they were building about a 12-pound day, but with her, they took the final spot in the top 10 for the day.
Jay and Ryan held the overall lead for almost half of the afternoon, but they too would get bumped by a catch weighing almost exactly a pound more. Justen & Ty Fain were next to bust into first, coming in strong at 21.90, which they secured until another 10th flight boat broke through for only the 3rd lead-change all day.
Bradley and Brandon closed out the day with their incredible 23.10-Pound bag, a day that saw over 180 bags of fish weighed in. Like Winston and Sandy, the Big Fish Winners of the day, Bradley and Brandon fished in the 10th flight, netting them almost 2 additional hours on the water vs the first flight.
The flights are flipped for the second day, so today’s early flights will score the extra fishing time. Except. Severe weather on the local forecast for the afternoon will certainly become a distraction, if not an actual showstopper if it gets rough enough to push them in early. Many people feel like the winning catch will be safely tucked away in a livewell by 12:00 High Noon.
A mild cold front worked into the area overnight, and by mid-morning, it had passed. Very few teams were able to be productive using the same techniques they had done well with during practice week. It also seemed that the bigger fish they were targeting at practice had dug in a little deeper, and a smaller generation had moved in.
An even more severe storm system is expected to slam into the area on Saturday and serious discussions are being held within the tournament leadership about the possibility of having to cancel the 3rd day. If that were to happen, the day 2 leaders would be crowned Champions. Since this has at least a remote possibility of happening, it’s going to be important for anglers to try their hardest to be on top at the end of the day tomorrow.
The most common difficulty among the competitors today seemed to be turning bites into scorable fish. There are always stories about broken lines, tail-walking escapes, and other close-range battles, but these were different. It was the hookset that seemed to be ineffective, even when extreme patience was deployed. So, either there were a lot of dull hooks being used today, or the fish had Teflon coated lips, and the hooks just wouldn’t stick.
