Lake Waco, Event #4 for Texas Central Fishers of Men has come to an end. This event started with an unbelievable welcome from Brazos Meadows Baptist Church in Hewitt, TX., to say they treated us like royalty would be an understatement. The church opened its doors to us and left a memorable impression on us all, the members of Brazos Meadows are certainly blessed with incredible cooking skills, WOW…. The treated all of those in attendance with a BBQ dinner, including homemade sausage, pulled pork, cole slaw, baked beans, and my goodness the deserts…. They filled a bunch of bellies to max capacity.
Pastor Billy Edwards presented a message about the two men that encountered the resurrected Jesus during their walk to Damascus, they sat with him and shared in conversation, and it wasn’t until he broke bread and disappeared did, they realize that they had been in the presence of Jesus. The message was very well delivered and well received by the 57 individuals in attendance. We were blessed to have him speaking to all the anglers and family members.
We had an amazing raffle to finish off the evening. Money raised through this raffle will be going to JMB Fishing Foundation to help support the efforts to take terminally ill children on fishing and hunting trips. You can learn more about JMB at https://jmbfishing.org/
Saturday morning came early, and all those fiberglass battleships slid off the trailers and into the water at Airport Beach Park. We played the national anthem and said a prayer to our creator, followed by calling boat numbers to officially start the competition.
At approximately 1pm we had the team of Keston Stokes and Hunter Bruggman running to the scales with a big bass that needed to be weighed early and released back into the water to ensure it was preserved for another angler to catch later. The big one held on for “THE MAJOR BIG BASS” title. Major Services sponsored our Big Bass for the event and we certainly appreciated it, and so did Keston and Hunter.
Justin Rathbun fished with his dad Lonnie (a legal substitute for his original partner) the two put together quite a limit of fish weighing 19.71lbs, their efforts were rewarded with First Place honors for the tournament. Second place was secured by Cameron Swonke and Nathan Harper, the two brought in an impressive limit weighing 19.57lbs. Gary Johnson and Seth Fisher grabbed ahold of third place, according to Gary it was the best 20 minutes of fishing he has experienced in a long while. The two brought in a limit weighing 16.41lbs. Fourth Place was taken by Jayson and Lake Kisselburg, the father / son team brought in a limit tilting the scales at 15.65lbs.
Lake Waco event was special, the banquet on Friday night was amazing, the weigh in was even better, the reason for this was the amount of family members that were present, watching on and experiencing the festivities as a family. Seeing family members gathered, enjoying the time with loved ones and sharing in conversation and laughs truly brings a smile to this director, nothing better than seeing family members sharing in the experience. We aren’t better, we are just simply different, we encourage family participation, we invite family, we love all those in attendance and we take the time to pray for the needs of all, hard to beat that with just another paycheck at the ramp.
We could not accomplish any of this without the blessing our Lord and Savior pour out upon us, he receives all the honor and all the glory. We also must recognize the individuals that help make it all work smoothly. A huge shout out to Nathan Eller, Chris Eller, Colton Eller, Melissa Eller and we were blessed to put “Soon to be” Ashley Eller to work this weekend. All these individuals certainly make my job easy, and I cannot thank them enough. Also, a huge thank you to our Chaplain Mr. Bill Shelnutt for loving everyone and taking the time to speak and hand out valuable reference material to those seeking a relationship with our Savior.
