~~The Kentucky West division rolled in to Gilbertsville, Kentucky for the fourth event of the season. Anticipation was high for the anglers as they prepared to fish the legendary ledges that have helped to make Kentucky Lake famous. Anglers reported mixed results in practice. Some still caught fish shallow that were guarding fry. Others focused their energies out deep and caught fish on the ledges. But before the tournament day, it was time to go back to Kuttawa First Baptist church once again for the pre-tournament meeting.
Pastor Carl Nelson and his wonderful staff of helpers welcomed us to a fried chicken dinner with all of the trimmings. There was also a table filled with desserts for everyone to enjoy while we settled in for a time of reflection. Pastor Carl spoke to us from Mark chapter 8 and reminded us of the need to be the kind of men that stand up for Jesus. Following the message four anglers recommitted their lives to Christ!
Tournament day dawned clear and seasonably warm. 32 teams sped off in search of five largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass. By the time everyone was in for the weigh in, temperatures had peaked out at 86° and boat traffic had made the giant lake very rough. But our anglers rose to the occasion, and brought several solid bags of fish to the scales.
Besting the field with a season high weight of 22.64 pounds was the team of Ken Freeman and Steve Haysley. Freeman and Haysley fished ledges all day and caught numerous keepers, throwing back many weighing around 3 pounds. They used football jigs tipped with Strike King Rage Craws as well as Carolina rigged Strike King Rage Hawgs. Along with their first place in the bonus bucks, they earned a total of $1657, and took home two handsome plaques provided by Awards Inc. in Glasgow, Kentucky.
Finishing in second place was the team of Timmie Gaddie and Clint Childress. Gaddie and Childress brought in 19.77 pounds of largemouth bass. They reported catching their fish out on the deeper ledges with football jigs as well as a few key fish on a magnum jigging spoon. They finished second in the bonus bucks and earned a total of $751.
Coming in third place, was the team of Lee Bishop and Marty Mullins with 17.63 pounds. Bishop and Mullins also fished ledges with a D & L football jig tipped with L & M Custom Bass Snacks creature baits. Along with their third place in the bonus bucks they earned $588.
The fourth place bag was brought to the scales by Steve Denton and Lloyd Easterly. Denton and Easterly also threw D & L football jigs tipped with L & M Custom Bass Snacks to catch 16.47 pounds of bass. Rounding out the top five was the team of Alfred Goldsberry and Steve Curtsinger with 15.54 pounds. They caught their fish on shaky head worms and jigs.
Come on out to Barren River Lake for the final event of the 2017 season! It promises to be a great time on July 1st!
