2017 Central Region - District 8 Championship

Welcome to the Central Division District 8 Championship at Kentucky Lake, one of the best bass lakes in the country! Thanks to Jody Gates of Moors Resort for sponsoring this event and providing a great facility to hold a fishing tournament.

The event started on Thursday evening as all the fishermen met at the Joe Creason Building in Benton, Kentucky.  At the completion of registration, we had a great meal of pulled pork followed by a message from our Central Division Director, Steve Wakefield who told the Bible story about Jesus asking the fishermen to go back on the lake after a night of catching nothing.  After listening to Christ and doing what he asked, they went back out and loaded the boats.  Steve ended by asking everyone if they needed Jesus in their “boat of life”.  After the message and meeting, we sent the fishermen home to get ready for the next day.

On Friday morning, 56 boats were checked in and left the boat ramp at first safe light. The morning air was a bit cool, and the weather man was calling for light winds and temperatures reaching 80 degrees later on.  After the afternoon check-in and the first teams showing up at the scales, we could see that for some it had been a tough day -- Kentucky Lake was not giving up numbers of fish as it does at times.  But, as in every tournament, some teams do the right things and find the sizes and numbers required to take day one lead spots.

The Kentucky LBL division team of Kenny Heckel and Kevin Meunier showed us what the lake can produce with a five fish limit weighing 23.66 lbs. The bag also held day one’s big bass weighing 5.41 lbs. In second place after day one, were Larry and Phillip Harris from Tennessee Central division with five bass weighing 15.41 lbs.  Steve Curtsinger and Alfred Goldsberry from Kentucky West division brought a limit to the scales weighing 14.24 for third. The Texas Northeast team of Mike Taylor and Ken Ratley stood in fourth with a limit weighing 13.22 lbs.  Dale Aldridge and Lee Hill from Alabama Northwest brought 12.19 lbs. to the scale and are currently in fifth.

Day one numbers:

Total limits, seven;  total fish, 120; total weight, 292.47 lbs.; and average weight/ fish, 2.44 lbs.

Tomorrow is another day, so stay tuned...anything can happen.

Fishers of Men would like to thank our National Sponsors for all that they do: Bass Cat Boats, Mercury, Berkley, Abu Garcia, Shakespeare, Spiderwire, Strike King, Power Pole, Kings Home, RayMarine, Duckett, Gator Guards, Buckeye Lures, Rayjus, HydroWave, Jacobs Glass, Kistler, and TH Marine.
