This is the final weekend of the 2017 season, and 71 teams are battling it out for the final 14 (+2) slots in the National Championship next spring.
Day one is all wrapped up and the final day has the makings of a very competitive finish. 4th through 14th place only has a 2-pound spread after almost every team brought a 5-fish limit in today. The next 2-point spread drops all the way to 33rd place. Even 50th place is less than 4-pounds from making the cut after the first day of competition. Bottom line, very few teams are really out of the running, if they have a strong day of fishing, and with a very strong weather system building up and heading into town, the fishing could be very different. It’s setting up for one of days were several of the teams at the top of the list will return to find their fish moved out with no forwarding address. It should be fun!!
As for the tournament itself, there is a very good battle underway for 1st place, the District Championship title, and a very nice cash prize to boot.
Steve Sanders & Tim Gables (Alabama Northeast Division) are in 1st place with 18.34#s and had the biggest fish of the day weighing 5.28 pounds
Mike Crump & Jeff Cooper (Alabama Northeast Division) are two pounds back at 16.05. They had the second biggest fish at 4.63#s.
George Crain & Allan Glasgow (Alabama Northeast Division) are a pound and a half behind second at 14.99 pounds. Ironically, the had the 3rd largest fish of the day. George and Allan have already clinched a spot at the National Championship by winning their Divisional Points Champions title during the regular season. If they stay in the top 14, the cut will move down to the 15th place team tomorrow.
It will take an extremely strong day 2 to for anyone to knock Sanders and Gables out of first if they come back to the scales with anything like they had today. The key for them to finish in first may come down to simply duplicating what they did today. It also feels very obvious that it will take a kicker fish as part of a five-fish limit to end up in the top five. Two kickers by one team could allow them to easily jump 20-30 places, so it’s easy to imagine that a single fish may have a lot to do with taking home the first-place plaques.
Ben and Lacy Kabel are leading the Boy/Girl category by a very slim margin, and are also fishing for a slot in the National Championship.
And last but certainly not least, Kevin and Josh Diamond have a very strong lead in the Adult/Junior category. They only have one team to potentially knock them out of a trip to Lake Guntersville as well.
