~~The Alabama Northeast Division kicked off the 2018 season at Logan Martin Lake just outside of Pell City, Alabama. Unseasonably warm weather all week leading up to the tournament had the anglers’ anticipation as high as the temperatures. Anglers reported catching lots of bass moving into the shallows as they practiced. It seemed that everyone was ready for a great Saturday’s fishing. But first, it was time for the Friday night meeting that Fishers of Men is known for.

The First Baptist Church of Pell City opened the youth building for the 77 anglers and staff members to gather together. New director, Joel Franks, and his staff prepared a delicious barbecue dinner complete with a variety of cakes for dessert. Following the meal, everybody settled in to listen as Joel shared from the Word of God. He talked about how much the Lord truly loves us and why we should all commit our lives to Him. At the end of the evening one angler made a decision to follow Christ and two more recommitted their lives to Him!

Saturday arrived with temperatures in the sixties and threats of rain showers. 35 teams blasted off in search of five fat largemouth or spotted bass to bring back to the 3:00 weigh-in. With the exception of one team that had mechanical difficulty, all were successful at bringing in a limit. Fish were caught shallow for the most part, with lots of different lures drawing bites from willing bass. Many anglers caught dozens of fish on this remarkable February day.

Besting the field with five largemouths weighing 22.49 pounds was the team of Tim Hurst and Mark McCaig. They reported catching their fish using lipless rattling crankbaits as well as Alabama rigs. Hurst and McCaig ran all over the lake and caught fish in many different places. Along with their first place finish in the Bonus Bucks, they earned $1,748.00 on the day.

Coming in second was the team of Mark Lovvorn and Warren Lovvorn. They tossed 1.5 squarebills into the shallows to boat 16.34 pounds of bass. They were able to earn $584 for their efforts. Finishing a close third was the team of Larry Melvin and Hank Winks with 16.23 pounds.
