Playing the Slots on Smith Lake
Of all the weird things, any bass 13”-15” falls into a protected length and can not be weighed in... even though the tournament is Catch-and-Release. And wouldn’t you just know it, that’s probably the hungriest size fish in the lake. So the fish have to be at least 12 inches but can’t reach 13”, unless of course it measures fifteen inches, and then you’re good to go.
Day 1 closed out with 6 teams in the double digits. Another half dozen or so we’re in the 9 pound class and another in the eight pound range. The pre-slot fish were not much of a factor in the 9 and up catches, but 16 teams will qualify to advance to the National Championship and if the cold front slows the bite down much tomorrow, those extra pounds could make a small huge difference.
The temps are expected to dip below freezing overnight, with highs cold enough to slaughter a hog, and the question remains, will the warm sunshine be enough to bring the baitfish to the top in big enough numbers to drag some late fall schools with them? Or, will the frigid temps and the strong cold front drive them deep or suspended, and knock the appetite right out of their minds?
Either way, and no matter the outcome, there will be lots of great fishing stories born over the weekend. And speaking of great stories, what an incredible story the anglers got to hear Thursday night over a wonderful platter of BBQ and Fixins. A story of two friends that God brought together while one of them was unknowingly headed down a dead end road of health issues, and at a time when the other was tuned into God’s guidance to the point that he was immediately able and willing to give part of his own body to allow his friend to survive. That’s something you’d normally only here happening with someone in your own family.
And speaking of families, the Anders Team, Michael and Jon, have a Very Strong lead heading into the 2nd and Final day. With over 16 pounds, they are well over 3 pounds ahead of second place and caught one of only two 4-pounders weighed in today.
They are being chased by 3 teams from Alabama Northeast all bunched up within a pound-and-a-half of each other. They all three had at least one 3.5+ Pounder anchoring their catches.
It will certainly be interesting to see if the South Carolinians can cash in on their lead to snatch an Out-of District victory from the Alabamians, or if they already brought their best 5 to the scales, and left the door cracked just wide enough for someone to blow in riding that frigid Northern wind.
