The North Carolina East Division of the Fishers of Men Team Series held their first scheduled tournament of 2019 this past Saturday on the Chowan River. Twenty two boats launched from the Cypress Landing Restaurant on Pembroke Creek in search of the winning catch. The weather was breezy and cool under partly cloudy skies with temperatures in the low 50’s.
Our Friday night meeting was hosted by the Camden United Methodist Church in Camden. The Jackie Berry Circle Women’s Group prepared a wonderful meal that included fried chicken, potatoes salad, green beans, hush puppies, rolls and plenty of delicious deserts. Pastor Marc O’Neal delivered a powerful message that was based on being prepared. Pastor Marc mentioned how fishermen put so much time into preparing their boats, motors, fishing rods, baits, and other items for the tournaments. The question he asked was “how much time do we prepare for eternity?” A few recommendations included accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior, daily payer, reading and studying his word, communing with fellow believers and being part of a church family.
March is such a great time to be in pursuit of those pre-spawn "big females" and the Chowan River is the great place to be to bring in that winning 5 fish limit. 22 teams brought 97 Bass to the scales that weighed 250.27 pounds. The average team weight was 11.38 pounds and the average fish weight was 2.58 pounds. When the weigh-in concluded, Kevin Jones and Gerald Murray brought in the winning five fish limit that weighed 18.42 lbs. for first place, which was anchored by the big fish of the tournament that weighed 5.35 pounds. They received $1,447.50 dollars for their days work including first place for the tournament $1,100.00; first place bonus bucks $237.50 and the big fish pot $110.00. Coming in second place was Tim Fallon and Richard Griswold Jr.with another nice bag of fish that weighed 18.02 pounds. They received $495.00 for second place, $142.50 for second place bonus bucks. Third place honors went to the team of Kirk Wall and Charlie Reed with a five bass limit that weighed 16.01 pounds. They took home $330.00 for third place and $95.00 for third place bonus bucks. Fourth place went to Jason Smith and Sam Spruill who brought a five fish limit to the scales that weighed 16.00 pounds. They took home $165.00 for their effort.
