Post tournament wrap-up

On May 4th, 2019, thirteen teams from the Maine division of The Fishers’ of Men National Tournament Trail competed in this division’s inaugural tournament on Great Pond in the beautiful Belgrade Lakes area. This fishery consistently ranks as one of the top destinations in Maine for early season bass fishing, and it did not disappoint as every team brought in a 5 fish limit, with a total of 65 bass caught for a combined weight of 184.75 pounds. Having endured one of the roughest winters in a long time, with ice out having occurred just a week earlier, water temps ranged from 42 to 50 degrees. Following this year’s cold harsh winter, Maine has also had one of the wettest springs in years so blast-off found every team dressed in layers and wet weather gear, but by midday, the sun made a surprise visit and dramatically changed the fishery. Team after team reported constant culling of 2lb plus smallmouth but the top teams were the ones that adapted to the changes and managed to add bigger largemouth to their livewells.

Taking 1st place and just under $1000 in prize money was the team of Nick Deering and Conner Petropoulous, perennial local favorites, with a total weight of 17.59 pounds. Showing they will be a force to be reckoned with, the team of Robert Williamson, (minus his son Alex, who is just finishing up his studies at Liberty University) claimed 2nd place via a mixed 5 fish bag that weighed in at 17.34 pounds, anchored by the biggest bass of the tournament, a beautiful largemouth at 4.77 pounds, making it a great start to the season with just under a $500 payday. Finishing in 3rd place was the team of Tyler Williams and Michael Capaldi with 16.11 pounds while Robert Spencer and Timothy Spry took 4th place with 5 beautiful bronzebacks weighing 14.84 pounds. Rounding out the top five places was the team of John Trask and Bobby Williams with a 14.49 pound bag anchored by the biggest smallmouth of the tournament at 4.11 pounds.

As is always the case with any Fishers’ of Men tournament event, the teams were excited about the opportunity to gather together the Friday night before, for an awesome night of fellowship, pre-tournament planning, great raffle and door prizes as well as an awesome free meal.  Special thanks to our hosts at Central Church, in Augusta and to Campus Pastor Joel, who honored us with an opening prayer before every team present enjoyed the fabulous buffet feast prepared by Chef Robert Spencer from AweStruck Catering Company. No team went hungry as they enjoyed some great barbequed chicken and pulled pork, with all the sides, as well as fresh strawberry shortcakes for dessert. After Jonathan and Dawn Nichols, Maines FOMNTT Divisional Tournament Directors, went thru all the needed tournament registrations and information for launch and weigh-in, they introduced that evenings speaker, Ian Godwin, who shared how God is still there for you, even in tough times or when we deny him. Giving hope to anyone and eliminating excuses for all of the 26 guests in attendance, 2 individuals chose to accept Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior while 2 others rose to the challenge to do more with their faith, so much so that they rededicated themselves to a renewed commitment to return to God and follow Jesus in all areas of their lives!

There are four events left in the 2019 schedule for the Maine division and that means you still have plenty of time to make the big Northeast Regional Championship as well as potentially qualify for a chance to compete at the FOMNTT National Championships, where two brand new fully loaded Bass Cat / Mercury Motor boat packages will be awarded in addition to other cash and prizes. We cannot emphasize how important it is to make these next events and all you must do to be eligible is to have fished in at least 3 of the 5 Maine 2019 tournaments.
