Event #5 on Lake Buchanan closes out the 2023 season for Fishers of Men Texas Central. What an amazing event this was, a great event that capped off a great season. It all started Friday night at Cross and Spurs Cowboy Church at Buchanan Dam, TX. Pastor Johnny Sawyer and his staff welcomed the anglers with open arms, what an amazing group of folks there at Cross and Spurs. The team there delivered a special meatloaf recipe, bread, green beans, mashed potatoes, and several different desserts. It was enjoyed by all.
Pastor Sawyer presented a message to all the anglers; he spoke about a church member that had recently left this earth to be with God. The individual’s request was to have Pastor Sawyer speak at his funeral targeting those who were in attendance that may not have a relationship with God. He did not want a message presented to the audience about his life, the good things he had done, or anything other than the importance of having that special relationship. Pastor Sawyer blessed us with this story and spoke on the value of such a relationship. We were blessed to hear the message.
We followed the message with a massive raffle, our biggest of the season. We gave away rods from Sawgrass Rods, Abu Garcia, Salt Grass Fishin’ Stiks, and Ardent Outdoors. RPG Outdoors brought somewhere around 60 bags of custom poured soft plastic, Coda Lures brought in 48 hand tied jigs, we had Firefly Lights, numerous Forage Lures Custom painted lures, ProTec Products detail kits, FishLife Fish Care kits, Vicious Fishing products, Omnia Fishing gift cards, Custom Truck & Wheel of Killeen gift cards, and many more. It was a great raffle, and everyone had a great time. Melissa Eller put together 7 spouse gifts and we just so happened to have 7 spouses in attendance, they all went home with something special.
Anglers were expecting 1.07 inches of rain for Saturday with a massive storm front kicking things off late Friday night. The Friday night storm came and made a statement, however by 7am Saturday morning the rain was gone, and anglers enjoyed the day of fishing with minimum rain fall. The team of Colton Hill and Justin Williams certainly took advantage of the weather and put a hurting on Lake Buchanan largemouth, the two came to the scales with 22.81lbs for the win. Mike Sedillo and Justin Rathbun found a limit big enough for second place for the event, they reported to the scales with a limit weighing 17.6lbs, Mike anchored his limit with the big bass for the event weighing 5.89lbs. Gus Chavira and Toby Turner secured third place with a limit tilting the scales at 15.84lbs. Austin Talasek and Kyler Roberts slid into fourth place with a decent limit weighing 13.44lbs. We finished up the day presenting Nathan Eller with a custom rod built by tournament director Will Eller, the rod was presented for biggest bass caught during the 2023 season. Nathan had caught a 9.01lb large mouth on Lake Belton earlier in the season and that weight held throughout. Congratulations to all the winners.
Anglers Hal Gatewood and Andy Whitehead finished the season up as our points champions. The two have secured a birth into the Fishers of Men National Championship which will be held next March.
