The North Carolina East Fishers of Men Firefly Weeknight Series held their fourth tournament of the 2023 season on the Little River Friday, September 8, 2023. The weather again posed some tough conditions for our fishermen with temperatures in the high 90’s with a heat index over 100 degrees and winds out of the southwest 10-15 mph gusting to 25 mph and the threat of storms looming.  12 teams participated in the tournament and all teams attended the pre-tournament meeting.

The meeting was started with a prayer and our Chaplain Kenneth Wallace providing the message. Ken discussed how we often put our things before God even though it is God who is the giver of all things. He referenced 1 Samuel 2:7 that tells us” All of our possessions are His and He gives and He takes away as He sees fit”. Ken continued by asking us to put God first in our lives and not to let the distractions of our everyday lives keep us away from Him.

After reviewing the rules highlights, our fishermen set out on the River in search of the winning catch. The fishermen found the high water and the threat of storms to be a factor as well as winds associated with the storms.  There were only 16 fish weighed for a total of 39.5 pounds. 16 of the fish were released back into the water for 100% release. The average number of fish per team was 1, average weight per team 3.30 pounds and the average fish weight was 2.47 pounds. When the teams came to the scale, Dustin Winslow and Brian Richardson had the winning 5 fish limit that weighed 13.21 pounds with a 3.88 pound kicker. The first place prize was $345 dollars. They also had the Big Fish for the tournament with the 3.88 pound fish that paid $60.00 dollars. Second place was awarded to Chris Meads and Zachery Meads who brought four fish to the scales that weighed 7.84 pounds. They took $75.00 dollars home for their efforts. Third place with three fish that weighed 7.51 pounds was the team of Jim Dick and Greg Dick. Due to the number of boats, only two places were paid.

We would like to thank all those who helped with making this tournament a success, especially Kenneth Wallace, Gary Sawyer, Isaiah Seigh, Tom Houlroyd and Bruce Simons as well as all our fishermen. We also would like to thank all the Fishers of Men sponsors; Bass Cat, Mercury, Realtree Fishing, Power Pole, Firefly Outdoor and Marine, Abu Garcia, Berkley, Spiderwire, TH Marine and X2Power.
